Single and Triple Strokes in Strange Times
This is an exercise to work on the timing of single stroke fours, or playing 16th note triplets starting on the down and upbeats. Using 7/8 and other time signatures to help it flow but forcing the pattern to fall on the upbeat. Triplets and sextuplets with sticking patterns for both hands, plus the second time through also have the same rhythm but played with triple stroke sticking.
The purpose is to gain confidence and accuracy when playing these patterns on the downbeat or upbeat no matter the sticking. The triple stroke challenge is to fight the natural decay in stick height that occurs as you play three beats one-handed. Pus and fight for three equal strokes here and they’ll be much more even and balanced when you encounter them in your music.
